The Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks will both have the bulk of their starters on the field to open their final NFL preseason game tonight.

Deshaun Watson’s status is still in the air for the Browns, but we could get our first glimpse of him throwing to their trio of stud receivers. Meanwhile, Geno Smith will get a few series under center for the Seahawks as they continue to break in their new offensive scheme.

Find out why key injuries for Cleveland will play an important role in the outcome of this one in our Browns vs. Seahawks predictions and NFL picks for Saturday, August 24.

My analysis

We probably won’t know until close to kickoff on Saturday whether or not Deshaun Watson will take an in-game snap for the first time in nine months. But I’m not sure that it will matter for a Cleveland Browns offense that is still looking for answers at multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball.

Starting running back Nick Chubb will begin the season on the PUP list. They’ll also begin the season without four different offensive tackles, including both projected starters. That’s in addition to center Luke Wypler undergoing surgery after a fractured ankle in the opening preseason game.

That’s led to a putrid rushing attack so far this preseason. They have just 112 rushing yards on 44 attempts, and that’s with all of their quarterbacks gaining positive yardage on the ground.

As for Saturday, it’s going to lead to a long day for whoever is taking the snaps for Cleveland. The Seattle Seahawks defense has only seen their starters play two series this preseason, but both were 3-and-outs. In addition, their pass rush has been terrific, and rookie edge rusher Derick Hall has been a menace every time he’s seen the field.

The Cleveland defense has allowed 23+ points in both of their preseason contests. Geno Smith and the Seattle offense will see their first action of the campaign and should get the Seahawks on the board early. They’ll then give way to the backups, where Seattle will still be throwing the ball as they decide whether Sam Howell or PJ Walker will assume the backup role.

I think the wrong team is favored to win here. Cleveland’s offensive line has too many issues, and a long trip across the country for a very late kickoff won’t make things any easier. I’ll take the plus-odds for the Seahawks to get the victory outright.
