Patriots vs Commanders Prediction, Picks & Odds for This Week’s NFL Preseason Game

With Drake Maye expected to see more action and several key roster battles still in play for New England, the Patriots hold the betting edge over a Washington side that already has a clear picture of its Week 1 depth chart.

After trading away a top wideout in Jahan Dotson this week, the Washington Commanders will take the field in the nation’s capital on Sunday to finish up their preseason against the New England Patriots.

The Pats are coming off a one-point loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and will be looking to get their offense going in the hopes of finishing 2-1, while Washington is still seeking its first exhibition win.

Find out why New England has a leg up on its competition in our free Patriots vs. Commanders predictions and NFL picks for Sunday, August 25.

My analysis

It sure would seem that Jayden Daniels will be used sparingly on Sunday, if at all. The No. 2 pick in this year’s draft has already won the starting job for the Washington Commanders, so there’d be little reason to give him any extended run.

That leaves the Commanders’ offense in a precarious position. They put up just six points last week against the New York Jets, all of which came in the second quarter. Trayce McSorley and Jeff Driskel failed to move the ball like Daniels did, and aside from Brian Robinson Jr., this run game was stopped in its tracks.

Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have allowed just 17 points through two preseason games, and also remain with several ongoing roster battles.

One of the biggest is for the starting quarterback job, and that’ll bring a good deal of life out of the Patriots’ offense. Although Drake Maye seems to be pushing into the lead, he’s been used sparingly during the preseason. The first-round selection was given a bit more time to showcase his talents against Philly, but New England elected to run the ball with him under center and he finished with just 11 attempts (which was still a team-high).

I expect to see Maye a ton in this one, and the Commanders’ secondary is one to attack after being one of the worst in football a season ago. Mike White completed 11-of-20 passes for 116 yards against this team last week, and even Skylar Thompson had success.

Expect Maye to take advantage of a soft matchup and win himself some favor with the Patriots. This is the deeper of the two teams, and the players on the field will have much more to play for considering Washington is left with fewer roster decisions.
