The New York Rangers are rolling along a three-game winning streak and head to the Bell Centre to face the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, October 22.

Our Canadiens vs. Rangers predictions expect Montreal starter Sam Montembeault to be busy between the pipes again tonight, and he headlines our top NHL picks below.

Canadiens vs Rangers prediction

My Canadiens pick
Sam Montembeault Over 28.5 saves (-125 at BET99)

My Canadiens analysis
The Montreal Canadiens have lost the 5-on-5 possession battle in six consecutive games to rank 32nd with a 39.9 Corsi For percentage and 40.9% shot share, and while the New York Rangers aren’t a strong possession team, they’ve registered the third-most shots per 60 minutes (33.1) at 5-on-5 and the third-most per game (33.0).

This matchup sets the Blueshirts up to approach 35 shots tonight, which positions Habs No. 1 goalie Sam Montembeault to once again be busy between the pipes.

Montembeault hasn’t cleared this saves benchmark in any of his past three starts, but he’s been solid in three of four appearances this year with a high-end .932 save percentage and 0.80 goals saved above average per 60.

His outlier dud against the Penguins — when he allowed five goals on just 29 shots — offsets the 48-save shutout against the Maple Leafs in the opener, too.

Additionally, the Canadiens have taken the fifth-most minor penalties at 5-on-5 and average the eighth-most shorthanded time per game, which is another boon for the Over.

Canadiens vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6.5

Sam Montembeault Over 28.5 saves

Kirby Dach Over 1.5 shots

The Rangers have only allowed four goals during their three-game winning streak, and they also blanked the Penguins in their season opener. New York No. 1 Igor Shesterkin is also in high-end form with a .935 SV% and 1.15 GSAA/60 through his first four starts. Montembeault isn’t the only goalie I expect to be sharp tonight.

Canadiens center Kirby Dach projects to jump to the top line with Juraj Slafkovsky (shoulder) out of action. Dach also skates with the No. 1 power-play unit, and he’s recorded two or more shots in three of six games.

The Rangers also haven’t been a dominant 5-on-5 possession team with a 22nd-ranked 48.4 Corsi For percentage, and New York has also allowed the seventh-most shots per 60 minutes and per game to start the year.
