The Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights square off tonight in a battle between two perennial powerhouses in the Western Conference.
My Golden Knights vs. Avalanche predictions see the home side rebounding from a blowout defeat last time out, with superstar center Nathan MacKinnon leading the charge.
Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for November 27.
Golden Knights vs Avalanche prediction
My best bet
Nathan MacKinnon Over 3.5 shots (-118 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Nathan MacKinnon takes his game to a different level seemingly every time he faces the Vegas Golden Knights.
MacKinnon has generated at least four shots on target in nine of his past 10 against Vegas, averaging a whopping five shots on 8.1 attempts during that span.
He’s been especially dominant at home, where head coach Jared Bednar is able to optimize MacKinnon’s minutes better. Nate recorded 26 shots on 42 attempts over his last four home games vs. the Golden Knights.
Although MacKinnon’s volume has dipped of late, he’s in a great spot to get back on track. Vegas is an excellent team, but its ability to pile up wins stems more from the offense than the defense — particularly at 5-on-5.
The Knights have really struggled in that game state, ranking 26th in shot suppression and 28th in expected goals allowed over the last 10 games.
They've also played very fast-paced, high-event hockey. They rank third in 5-on-5 pace the past 10 games, making this a great pace-up spot for MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche.
Not to mention, only six teams have conceded more shot attempts per game on the road than the Golden Knights. They're susceptible to giving up shots in bulk, as we’ve seen during their current road trip (Philadelphia generated 36 shots, and Ottawa piled up 40).
Back to MacKinnon for a moment: He's fared noticeably better at home this season, averaging 3.8 shots on goal in Colorado compared to just 2.9 on the road.
Vegas’ recent form and struggles on the road suggest his home success will continue.
Golden Knights vs Avalanche same-game parlay (SGP)
Jack Eichel has been a priority target for Unders all season long. He’s cleared in just eight of 22 games (36%), including two of 12 on the road (17%).
Eichel averages 2.6 shots on 4.4 attempts away from Vegas, and his lone Overs came against non-playoff teams in the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators.
The Avalanche are certainly a big step up in class and they're holding onto a playoff spot despite dealing with an extraordinary amount of injuries this season. Knowing they have goaltending issues, the Avs have emphasized limiting shots. Only two teams have allowed less volume at 5-on-5, and they rank eighth in limiting shots to opposing centers.
As for the Colorado moneyline, it got destroyed by Tampa Bay on Monday, and this veteran team will look to respond against one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
The Golden Knights don't pack nearly the same punch on the road (six wins, six losses) as at home (eight wins, two losses) and find themselves playing at altitude to end a lengthy road trip.
