My analysis
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval has seen better days, as the 27-year-old brings an embarrassing 5.24 ERA to Dodger Stadium for tonight’s series opener. This has been a tough matchup for him throughout his career as the lefty is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across five previous starts.
One area of Sandoval’s game that is difficult to miss when handicapping his games is that he struggles to get right-handed hitters out, getting blasted by RHB to the tune of a .285 BA, .422 SLG, and .338 wOBA.
This is not a one-year phenomenon as Sandoval has been great against lefties in his career (.196 BA, 1.00 WHIP) but ineffective against right-handed bats (.263 BA, 1.51 WHIP) over a large sample. By now we can trust the data and the numbers are painting a compelling picture.
One batter in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup who should thrive against these splits is outfielder Teoscar Hernandez. He’s posted strong numbers against lefties in his career with a 138 wRC+, .372 wOBA, and .563 SLG.
This year has been no exception, and he’s doling out even more damage than usual, tagging southpaws for a 160 wRC+, .394 wOBA, and .622 SLG.
Hernandez has been on fire, raising his OPS from .767 on June 5 to .834 at current. He’s bopped six home runs this month while driving in 16 runs and posting a .947 OPS. The slugger appears ready to step up when needed as the Dodgers deal with the absence of star shortstop Mookie Betts.
The books are offering plus money for Hernandez to exceed his total bases prop of 1.5. That’s too good of a number for me to pass up considering Sandoval's struggles against righties and Hernandez's notable platoon splits.

Rookie Andy Pages has positively destroyed lefties this year, batting .370 with an absurd 170 wRC+ and .409 wOBA. I oscillated between Pages and Hernandez as my favorite player prop target for today’s best bet, so I’m a fan of both.
The Dodgers have been the best lineup against lefties this season with a wRC+ (133) that is 11 points higher than the next-closest team and a wOBA (.355) that is 14 points clear of second place. The Angels are hardly out of the clear when Sandoval exits the game considering their bullpen has been downright dreadful (5.34 ERA, 1.39 WHIP).
Walker Buehler is back on the IL and the Dodgers required another starter to bolster the rotation. Enter rookie Landon Knack, who impressed with a 2.61 ERA across four starts earlier this season for LAD. He now faces an Angels lineup that has been impotent against right-handed pitching, entering tonight with a glim 92 wRC+ and a .300 wOBA.
