As the Seattle Mariners hunt to get back into playoff position, they’ll be greeted by the first of two Los Angeles Angels pitching prospects in Southern California tonight.
My Mariners vs. Angels predictions expect Samuel Aldegheri to have success in his first start above the Double-A level when he takes on one of the worst offenses in baseball. Find out more in our MLB picks for Friday, August 30.

My analysis
Now that we’re in September and service time issues are out of the question, the Los Angeles Angels are beginning to dip down into their farm system and give some pitching prospects the chance to prove themselves at the big-league level.
Samuel Aldegheri will be the first to take the ball, and the 22-year-old left-hander should enjoy this matchup against the Seattle Mariners. The M's are still the guiltiest team in the league when it comes to striking out, which has led to some unsavory offensive numbers, and there’s been a noticeable drop against lefties. They sit 25th in wRC+ inside that split as opposed to 17th in the reverse, hitting just .206.
Although George Kirby takes the hill for Seattle tonight, the right-hander has struggled on the road this year with a 3.92 ERA compared to a 2.94 mark in Seattle. He's also maintained some very pedestrian strikeout numbers, which could help the Angels out a ton considering they’ve punched out in 32.2% of their plate appearances over the last two weeks.
Kirby has endured the worst month of his season by far, allowing 32 hits over 19 1/3 innings in August, with 19 runs against him — 14 of them earned. He certainly seems vulnerable, and with some renewed energy brought on by an anticipated debut, L.A. offers value as home dogs tonight.
Mariners vs Angels same-game parlay (SGP)
The Mariners remain atop the league with a 27.8% strikeout rate this season, and that number has remained more or less the same over the last two weeks. Now they’ll have a look at Aldegheri, who’s been striking out 30% or more of the hitters he’s faced down in the minor leagues.
I believe in the swing-and-miss ability of the southpaw, and it also helps that he should remain in the game for a while given the Mariners’ inability to hit lefties. It’s always hard to translate your minor-league strikeout numbers at the big-league level, but he did strike out five or more in all but three of his 19 minor-league starts this year.
Mickey Moniak has quietly hit .333 this month, with eight of his 19 hits going for extra bases. He’s 3-for-10 in his career against Kirby, notably striking out just twice, and he’s led the Angels with a .287 xBA while trailing only Zach Neto in xSLG (.456).
