The Baltimore Orioles took the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a tight 3-2 game on Tuesday night, but we could be poised for a much different-looking contest tonight as Corbin Burnes and Walker Buehler take the mound for their respective clubs.
Both starters are in the middle of their worst stretches of the season, which could play to the hitters’ favor at Dodgers Stadium, as I explain in my Orioles vs. Dodgers predictions and MLB picks for Wednesday, August 28.
Orioles vs Dodgers prediction
My best bet
Over 8.5 (-112 at DraftKings)
My analysis
Corbin Burnes was considered a Cy Young odds frontrunner only a month ago, but that ship has likely sailed due to an atrocious month of August. The Baltimore Orioles ace has posted a brutal 8.71 ERA this month and is coming off two of his worst starts of the year after giving up a combined 18 hits and 13 earned runs through his last 9 2/3 innings of work.
Los Angeles Dodgers starter Walker Buehler has not been much better since his return from a right hip injury that kept him out for two months. The right-hander hasn’t pitched past the four-inning mark in either of his two starts this month and carries a bloated 7.36 ERA.
Pitching aside, the Orioles and Dodgers are both Top 4 scoring teams in the MLB and should deliver fireworks at some point this series.
Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts each have six RBI over their last five games, so I like their chances to keep it going against a struggling Burnes and help carry this Over.
Shohei Ohtani pick: Burning Burnes
My best bet
Shohei Ohtani 2+ total bases (+100 at DraftKings)
My analysis
Tuesday’s game was a quiet one for Ohtani by his lofty standards as he picked up two singles and scored a run in the Dodgers’ defeat. The Japanese superstar hasn't been at his best this month, batting just .227 in August, but has been returning to form over the last couple of weeks.
Ohtani has recorded a hit in eight of his last nine games while notching 2+ total bases in six of those outings. He’s shown plenty of pop with four home runs and a triple during that span and should have the upper hand vs. Burnes tonight.
Orioles vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)
Betts has been hot since returning from injury earlier this month, logging 11 RBI in 13 games. The L.A. slugger has seven RBI in his last six games while driving in at least one run in four of those outings.
Burnes has given up 4+ earned runs in three of his last four starts so there should be plenty of offense to go around for the Dodgers.
