The Pittsburgh Pirates return from the All-Star break with a tough test against the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park on Friday night.

The Phillies are picking up steam as favorites against their cross-state rivals and come out of the break as the best team in baseball at 62-34 and 25-18 on the road. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is right at .500 (48-48) and 22-24 at home.

Can the Phillies stay hot? Read on for our Phillies vs. Pirates predictions and MLB picks for Friday, July 19.

My analysis
I’m playing it safe on Friday night and going with the Philadelphia Phillies on the moneyline. It’s Aaron Nola against Martin Perez at PNC Park with the Phillies holding a distinct advantage on the mound.

Aaron Nola is 11-4 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.02 WHIP through 19 starts this season. The Phillies are 15-4 in Nola’s starts, including 9-2 in his last 11 outings since May 14. Nola routinely goes at least six innings before handing over the ball to one of the best bullpens in the league.

While the Phillies bullpen has had some hiccups lately, Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman are fresh off a trip to the All-Star Game with the rest of the pen fully rested.

Martin Perez doesn’t instill as much confidence in the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's 1-5 with a 5.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 14 starts this season. Pittsburgh won Perez’s first two starts but the Buccos are just 2-10 in his last 12, including four straight losses.

Perez is known to fall victim to a crooked number and this Phillies offense can put up runs in bunches. This line has already risen quite a bit, so shop around for the best MLB odds you can get, but I’d play this up to around -165.
