The river runs Reds
Until the Cincinnati Reds start to show notable improvements, we are going to keep picking on them. And that includes tonight’s game when they host Joe Musgrove and the San Diego Padres.
Yes, it’s going to be a long summer in Cincinnati. The Reds have won three games and have scored just 43 runs (both worst in MLB). They have particularly struggled against right-handers, ranking dead last in both batting average (.179) and OPS (.530) against them. So, tonight, they’ll have their hands full with Musgrove.
The Padres right-hander has been outstanding to start the season, pitching to an expected ERA of 2.76 and a 0.74 WHIP, allowing four earned runs on just 13 hits in 19 innings. He's also racked up 21 strikeouts compared to just one walk over his first three starts.
Oh, did we mention his last start came against this same Reds team? Well, it did, and Musgrove limited them to two runs on four hits while striking out seven in 6 1-3 innings of work.
The Reds counter Musgrove with Reiver Sanmartin, a soft-tossing lefty whose last start came against the Padres and they tagged him for five runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. And with San Diego ranked 10th in OPS when facing southpaws, the Padres should be able to do it again.
With Musgrove on the mound combined the Reds’ deficiencies against right-handers, the righty looks like a solid bet to record a win tonight at plus money.
Pick: Joe Musgrove to record a win (+125 at bet365)
Lourdes help us
Editor's note: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not listed in the Blue Jays' starting lineup. This pick was published prior to the lineup announcement.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is in a groove. The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder has hit so well that he’s become the team’s regular cleanup hitter with Teoscar Hernandez on the sidelines with an oblique injury. Gurriel will look to clean up again today when he and the Jays continue their series against the visiting Boston Red Sox.
The Jays took Game 1 by a score of 6-2 and Gurriel contributed with a home run and a double. Gurriel has torn the cover off the ball over his last 10 games, hitting .368 with a 1.013 OPS with six extra bases hits and six multi-hit games over that stretch.
Now, he goes up against Nick Pivetta, who must have nightmares before every start he makes against the Jays. The right-hander has been walloped for a 6.66 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP over six starts versus Toronto dating back to last season.
That includes getting roughed up for five runs on seven hits in just four innings of work in his last start back on April 20th. Gurriel was responsible for one of those hits and went 2-for-5 in that game.
Bet on Gurriel to stay hot in tonight’s matchup and go Over his total bases in the process. Something he has done six times in his last 10 games.
Pick: Lourdes Gurriel Over 1.5 total bases (+125 at bet365)
Anderson annihilates lefties once more
The Chicago White Sox were the overwhelming favorites to win the American League Central heading into this season, but they have stumbled a bit out of the gates with a 6-9 record and a -18 run differential. But one thing that remains constant is shortstop Tim Anderson still loves facing southpaws, and he’ll go against one tonight when they host Daniel Lynch and the Kansas City Royals.
The White Sox have been known for crushing lefties in recent seasons and Anderson has kept that up this year, even in limited at-bats. Anderson is 6-for-8 against lefty hurlers this season with two doubles and a home run. Overall he is hitting .313 with a .847 OPS.
Tonight, he’ll face a starter who has been a frequent victim of the White Sox’s lefty bashing ways in Lynch. He's already made three starts against the Pale Hose in his short career, getting lit up for a 16.20 ERA and 2.64 WHIP. That includes surrendering six home runs in 8 1-3 innings.
Anderson is 2-for-5 against Lynch in his career and looks like a great bet to go Over his total bases prop in this one.
Pick: Tim Anderson Over 1.5 total bases (+100 at DraftKings)
