Sam Howell was strong in Seattle's preseason opener against the Chargers and considering he's getting more run against the Titans today, we suggest you back the Seahawks.

With the real business of Week 1 football just over 20 days away, the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans continue their preparation with a showdown at Nissan Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams are 1-0 this preseason, as Seattle picked up a win over the Chargers last weekend and Tennessee held off the 49ers. My Seahawks vs. Titans predictions and NFL picks center around a top tip for this weekend’s game.

My analysis
From all accounts, it’s going to be backups against backups in Nashville on Saturday night, with the starters seeing plenty of snaps during the teams’ joint practices this week. That makes this contest more about settling on-the-bubble roster decisions.

A battle of second-stringers feels like an edge for the Seattle Seahawks, especially with Sam Howell set to start under center. He's coming off two scoring drives against the Chargers and he appeared in 17 games for the Commanders last season.

He completed 16 of his 27 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown against L.A., and he’ll be working with motivated fringe receivers trying to make the final roster, including Jake Bobo and Laviska Shenault Jr.

The news that Malik Willis, rather than Mason Rudolph, will start for the Tennessee Titans is another reason to fade the hosts (though Rudolph is expected to see a share of the drives). Willis ran for 42 yards against the 49ers last weekend but his five completions went for a total of 38 yards.

Both teams ran the ball well in their preseason openers, but I see Seattle’s Kenny McIntosh-George Holani duo having the bigger impact here. They combined for 65 of the Seahawks’ 157 rushing yards against the Chargers, with Holani finding the end zone.

That said, Tennessee's defense has looked more vulnerable against the pass, coughing up 219 passing yards against San Francisco, including a bunch of chunk plays that exposed inexperience in the secondary. That should be music to Howell’s ears and I see him making an aggressive start.

Ultimately, I prefer to trust the backups in Mike Macdonald’s Seattle defense. They made life tough on L.A. last weekend, holding the Chargers’ reserves to just three points and 121 passing yards. This game is set up for the visitors to dare Willis to beat them with his arm, and Howell feels like a safer bet if the outcome hinges on the passing game.
