Two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference meet in a battle between contenders in the Stanley Cup odds Thursday, with the Boston Bruins visiting the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.

Not only are Boston and Carolina both chasing the top seed in the conference, but they’re also in the running to hoist the President’s Trophy.

This is the final stop in a six-game road trip for the Bruins and they’ve won their past two to improve to 21-8-9 on the highway. Still, after blanking their opponent in consecutive games to storm to an active 13-3-1 surge, it’s the Hurricanes and their dominant 25-9-4 record on home ice trading as the favorite in the NHL odds.

Here are our free NHL picks and NHL player props for the Bruins vs. Hurricanes clash on Thursday, April 4.

Bruins vs Hurricanes odds

Bruins vs Hurricanes predictions

The Carolina Hurricanes are the 5-on-5 darlings of the league and they also crush both special teams. Goaltending has also gone from a weakness to a strength this year, sporting a top-ranked .925 team save percentage during their highlighted heater.

It’s a similar story for the Boston Bruins in goal and on special teams. The Bruins have just overachieved at 5-on-5. Additionally, a quick peek at the Boston depth chart showcases a team faring far better than the sum of its parts.

5-on-5 CF% 5-on-5 xGF% PP% PK% PDO
Bruins 47.2% (24th) 50.4% (17th) 23.0% (9th) 82.4% (7th) 102.9 (2nd)
Hurricanes 59.3% (1st) 56.2% (1st) 26.7% (3rd) 85.8% (1st) 99.5 (21st)

There’s a huge gap in the highlighted fancy stats and the Bruins drop to a 25th-ranked 45.7 CF% at 5-on-5 on the road. I’m also giving the Hurricanes the edge in the schedule spot. Carolina has been off since Saturday, and as noted, Boston is wrapping up a six-game roadie with its toughest test of the trip.

If Boston does stick to its goaltending rotation Thursday, it’ll be Jeremy Swayman in net. He’s sporting a confidence-shattering .858 SV%, 3.37 GAA, and -1.08 goals saved above average per 60 across his past five starts.

Carolina rolls the Spoked Bs in Raleigh on Thursday.

My best bet: Hurricanes in regulation (+110 at bet365)

Bruins vs Hurricanes same-game parlay

Hurricanes in regulation

Under 6.5

Andrei Svechnikov Over 0.5 points

The Bruins and Hurricanes are two of the best defensive teams in the league and respectively allow the sixth- and third-fewest goals per game. They’ve also both trended to the Under of late and while Swayman hasn’t been sharp recently, his .916 SV% and 2.56 GAA for the campaign are high-end marks.

I’m targeting statistical correction for Andrei Svechnikov with the final leg of this SGP. The 24-year-old Russian has been held to just a pair of assists and 0.8 points per 60 across his past nine contests but posted a team-high 3.43 points per 60 through his first 45 games of the season.

Bruins vs Hurricanes moneyline and Over/Under analysis

  • There has been a small move to the Carolina moneyline since opening. The Hurricanes opened at -150 through bet365 and are trading at -155 as of Thursday morning.

  • Given the discussed schedule and statistical advantages for the Hurricanes, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was additional movement to the Carolina side.

  • The total is a consensus 5.5 with the higher vig on the Over.

  • I’m interested to see the betting action and market reaction to this total because Carolina allows the third-fewest goals per game and Boston the sixth-fewest. Additionally, both teams have trended to the Under of late and when going head-to-head.
