The Carolina Hurricanes appear to be coming out of a rut, having won back-to-back games against teams battling for Wild Card spots.
My Bruins vs. Hurricanes predictions see Sebastian Aho leading the charge in another winning effort against an injury-plagued team.
Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for March 6.
Bruins vs Hurricanes prediction
My best bet
Sebastian Aho Over 0.5 assists (-104 at Pinnacle)
My analysis
Sebastian Aho ranks second on the Carolina Hurricanes in assists, trailing only newcomer Mikko Rantanen in that category.
He's piled up 36 assists through 61 games and recorded at least one in 46% of his games. Aho’s been most productive on home soil, picking up a helper exactly half of the time.
Aho has gone quiet with his playmaking, picking up only two helpers over his last 10. This affords us a great opportunity to buy low on home soil.
Before this stretch, Aho had recorded an assist on 34 of 79 goals he was on the ice for. That’s an on-ice assist rate of 43%. He's since assisted on two of the last 13 Carolina goals he’s been out for, good for an assist rate of 15%.
There can be a lot of noise in small samples. Zooming out, his body of work over the whole season tells us he should be picking up more assists than he has of late.
The tide is bound to turn sooner rather than later and a matchup with the Boston Bruins could be just what the doctor ordered.
The B's are a shell of their usual selves right now. Their top two defensemen — Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm — are out of the picture, while captain Brad Marchand is also injured. Depth forward, Trent Frederic was just sent packing before the deadline, and there’s the possibility more players sit tonight due to trade protection.
Boston is paper thin right now and ripe for the picking against a Carolina team sporting a remarkably strong 23-7-1 record on home soil.
Carolina has averaged 3.74 goals per game in their building while Boston has allowed 3.76 per game on the road.
This screams a multi-goal victory for the Hurricanes. If that’s the case, there’s a good chance their No. 1 center facilitates a goal along the way.
Bruins vs Hurricanes same-game parlay (SGP)
Andrei Svechnikov has cooked on home ice this season. He has points in seven of his last 10 in Carolina and a 60% hit rate on the year. This is normal for Svechnikov; he produced a point in 65% of Carolina’s home games a season ago.
His splits look even more encouraging in winning efforts. Svechnikov has hit the scoresheet in 67% of Carolina’s victories and 74% when playing on home soil.
Given how prolific Carolina’s offense is at home, and the amount of key absences Boston is dealing with, there should be plenty of opportunity for the Hurricanes’ big guns to get back on track.
Rounding out the parlay is a bet on the Hurricanes to take care of business inside of 60 minutes.
The Bruins have won only 10 times in 29 tries on the road this season and their recent form — five losses in six games since the 4 Nations tournament concluded — indicates they are about ready to pack it in.
The Hurricanes are fighting for home ice in the Metro Division, and this is not an opportunity they’ll want to waste.
