Tonight is the first meeting of the season between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils. It’s actually the first of three games against each other over their next nine games.
It’s a highly-anticipated game that features two of the top American-born hockey players, Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes, both of whom I figure to be productive tonight.
However, the Leafs have owned this matchup lately, winning nine of the last 10 games these two squads have played. Additionally, Matthews has also dominated the Devils throughout his entire career, scoring 14 goals and 23 total points in 15 games.
I think he continues to terrorize New Jersey tonight as he makes his Rocket Richard odds bid and goes Over his shot prop total of 4.5 shots on net.
Matthews has been a shooting machine this year, as he ranks fourth in the league with 296 shots in 69 games. Also, he’s been especially trigger-happy of late while paired alongside his new linemate Max Domi, who has a pass-first mentality. Matthews is averaging 5.4 shots on net over this past five-game stretch.
The Devils have had issues in their own end all season long and have spent more time in their own end than in the offensive zone. If you take their last seven-game stretch, they’ve allowed 31.4 shots on net per game.
If the Maple Leafs dictate the game like they’re capable of doing, then they should have a field day on the offensive end, leading to a higher shot volume for a guy like Matthews.
My best bet: Auston Matthews Over 4.5 shots on goal (-110 at Sports Interaction)

For Leg 1 of my same-game parlay, we’ll mirror my Matthews shots prop with an anytime goal bet. He’s the league's most dangerous scorer with 58 goals on the season, and he seems to take it up a notch when he plays New Jersey with 14 goals in 15 career games against the Devils.
Next up, let’s take the Leafs to score the first goal of the game. They’ve done this in 55.7% of their games this season. However, this is also a major fade play on the Devils who have allowed the first goal in 50 of their 71 games this season.
For my final leg, I’ll take the Over on the Leafs alternate total of 2.5 goals. The Buds average 3.6 goals per game and have scored three or more in seven of their last nine games. Additionally, the Devils are allowing 3.38 goals per game this season.

Devils vs Maple Leafs moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Maple Leafs come into tonight as the home favorites at -145 odds, with the Devils getting +120 odds as the road dogs. The Maple Leafs have owned this matchup of late. Toronto is 9-1 on the moneyline over the last 10 meetings between the two clubs.
However, the absence of Mitch Marner and Calle Jarnkrok could continue to negatively impact the Leafs’ special teams play, which may open the door for New Jersey to pull off the upset. I’m staying away from picking a side tonight.
The total for tonight’s game is set at 6.5, shaded toward the Under at -120, with the Over paying even money (+100). The Under has a combined record of 8-12 over each team’s last 10 games. The total has gone Under the number in three of the last four meetings.
