The Edmonton Oilers host the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Place on Wednesday, October 9, and the two clubs couldn’t have had more opposite offseasons.
Edmonton stocked its lineup with secondary scorers, while Winnipeg didn’t replace the bevy of veterans it allowed to walk in free agency.
Our top Jets vs. Oilers predictions and NHL picks are calling for Edmonton to hold Winnipeg’s depleted scoring corps in check tonight.
Jets vs Oilers prediction
My best bet
Jets team total Under 2.5 (+105 at Bet99)
My analysis
The Winnipeg Jets have no supporting cast behind their top scorers, and the Edmonton Oilers have the deepest lineup jumping the boards since superstar Connor McDavid arrived.
Edmonton is going to start on time this season, and that includes carrying over the possession dominance and stingy defense showcased following the hiring of Kris Knoblauch. The Oilers allowed the fifth-fewest goals per 60 minutes (2.16) while ranking third in Corsi For percentage (54.7%) and second in expected goals for percentage (56.9%) at 5-on-5 after Knoblauch took over.
That’s tidy hockey.
On the flip side, Winnipeg watched proven NHLers Tyler Toffoli, Sean Monahan, Nate Schmidt, and Brenden Dillon all walk this summer without adding replacements. The Jets are going to be all right, but that’s a lot of talent to lose, and their lineup is now uber dependent on Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Gabriel Vilardi, and Nikolaj Ehlers to score.
Solid scorers, sure, but Winnipeg is also now far easier to match up against.
Those matchups will also be all the easier for Knoblauch tonight with the advantage of the last change, and I also anticipate Oilers No. 1 Stuart Skinner to have a bounce-back campaign.
Skinner dipped to a .905 save percentage and 0.04 goals saved above average last year after posting respective .913 and 0.24 marks across the prior two seasons. Look for him to rebound and play much closer to those past numbers, with the improvement beginning tonight.
Jets vs Oilers same-game parlay (SGP)
The Oilers were third in goals per 60 (3.03) and paced the league in expected goals per 60 (3.17) with Knoblauch calling the shots.
I expect more of the same from Edmonton tonight, and that includes peppering Winnipeg No. 1 goalie Connor Hellebuyck with shots.
Edmonton led the league in shots per 60 minutes (32.87) and ranked third in both Corsi For percentage and attempts per 60 at 5-on-5 last season, and Hellebuyck ranks Top 5 in both save percentage (.917) and goals saved above average per 60 (0.38) over the past three seasons.
