Maple Leafs vs Kraken Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Mitch Marner has been a consistent presence on the Leafs' top power-play line, which is due for some puck luck soon. Marner could be in line to point on the PP vs. a Kraken side he's done well against in the past, per our NHL picks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs return home from Winnipeg for a date with the Seattle Kraken tonight at Scotiabank Arena.

The NHL odds favor Toronto in this matchup, and I’m betting on Mitch Marner and the Leafs finding success on the power play to help get the job done tonight.

My Leafs analysis

The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their three-game losing streak with a win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night and now head back home to take on the Seattle Kraken

The Buds have had the edge in this matchup ever since the Kraken entered the NHL in the 2021-22 season with a 5-1 record in six matchups. Toronto averages four goals per game in those contests and has gotten a lot of help from their power play. In just six games between the two clubs, the Leafs man-advantage unit has seven goals, operating at 36.6%.

That’s a far cry from the current PP situation, as the Leafs have struggled mightily to start the season, operating at a lowly 9.3%. However, it’s only a matter of time before the man-advantage gets going for the Maple Leafs.

They rank eighth in expected goals and fifth in high-danger chances on the man-advantage this year, according to Natural Stat Trick. Eventually those chances are going to drop for the Buds, and I think tonight’s game against the Kraken could do the trick.

Toronto made adjustments to the power play after the slow start by splitting up the top unit and spreading the wealth a little more across both units. This change did make the power play look a bit more dangerous in the Leafs’ win over the Jets on Monday.

What didn't change, however, was Mitch Marner’s role on the first unit. Play still goes through the Markham, ON native as he’s factored into all three power-play goals the Leafs have scored this season, and that should continue tonight.

As a whole, Marner has torched the Kraken throughout their young lifetime in the NHL, scoring six goals and adding eight helpers for a team-high 13 points in just six games, with four of them coming on the power play.

The Kraken penalty kill ranks 16th in the NHL and is operating at 80% while giving up a goal in four of their last six games. So there should be plenty of opportunity for the Maple Leafs to generate chances on the man advantage, and at +200, the price is right to make it my best bet.

Maple Leafs vs Kraken same-game parlay (SGP)

Mitch Marner 2+ shots on goal

Auston Matthews anytime goal

Maple Leafs moneyline

For the first leg of my SGP, since power-play points can't be parlayed, I’ll bet on Mitch Marner to get 2+ shots on goal. He’s been far more aggressive shooting the puck this season, averaging 2.8 shots per game, but has hit this prop in five straight games and has 4+ shots in three of his last four games. Plus, the Kraken are giving up an average of 29.9 shots per game. So there’s opportunity to be had here.

I also like Auston Matthews to score an anytime goal tonight. The reigning Rocket winner is shooting at a lowly 8.5% this season. That’s nearly half his career average. (16%). Those shots are bound to start dropping, and he’s got six goals in six games against the Kraken throughout his career.

Finally, I’ll finish off the parlay by taking the Maple Leafs on the moneyline tonight. The Leafs righted the ship with a dominant showing against Winnipeg Monday night and will look to continue that play tonight. Additionally, this bet is 5-1 all-time when the Leafs and Kraken face off, with the Leafs outscoring Seattle 24-16 over six games.
