Best NHL Player Props Today for Feb. 2: Stephenson Burns Flames on Power Play

The Calgary Flames' penalty kill is among the worst in the league, and turning to a backup goalie won't aid their cause. Look for Seattle Kraken forward Chandler Stephenson to lead the charge on the power play, per our NHL player prop picks.

Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets

Jake DeBrusk 1+ goals (+230 at BetRivers)

The Vancouver Canucks host the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday evening. Vancouver forward Jake DeBrusk found the back of the net against the Dallas Stars two nights ago, an event that occurred on the power play to extend his team lead in goals on the man-advantage.

This success on special teams is likely to continue against Detroit, a team that ranks last in the league in PK%. With that said, the Red Wings are not much better at even strength.

Detroit has struggled in the defensive zone this season, ranking 22nd in xGA/60 at 5-on-5. This trend of poor defensive play is not a new occurrence, which is why goaltender Alex Lyon allowed four goals in the last meeting against the Canucks.

Brock Boeser 1+ goals (+160 at BetRivers)

My thinking here is simple: I am confident that either DeBrusk or Brock Boeser will score in this game, which guarantees a profit. If both score, all the better.

They skate together on both the first line and first power play unit, making them well-positioned to exploit Detroit’s weak penalty kill. As mentioned in the previous section, the Red Wings also surrender an abundance of high-danger scoring chances at even strength.

While DeBrusk leads the team in power play goals, Boeser is tied for second.

We could also see some tired legs from a Detroit team that enters this contest on the second half of a back-to-back.

Chandler Stephenson Over 0.5 power play points (+330 at bet365)

Sticking with this theme of fading poor special teams, we are going to look at Seattle Kraken forward Chandler Stephenson to record a power play point in tonight’s nightcap against the Calgary Flames. This season, Calgary ranks 31st in penalty minutes taken per game and 28th in PK%.

Going on the kill typically leads to problems against Stephenson, who leads Seattle in power-play points. Nearly half of his total points have come on the man-advantage this year, and this success is likely to continue against the Flames.

Stephenson has recorded three goals over his past four games against Calgary, with two of those three goals coming on the power play.

Additionally, goaltender Dan Vladar is slated to guard the cage for the Flames. He is 6-10-5 through 21 starts this season with a .886 SV%.
