The New York Mets continue their push for a playoff spot as they host the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

New York took it to Philadelphia for a 10-6 win in the series opener on Thursday. This is anticipated to be a lower-scoring affair with two southpaws on the mound, and my Phillies vs. Mets predictions expect New York left-hander David Peterson to thrive most.

Find out more in my MLB picks for Friday, September 20.

My analysis

New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson has been quietly putting together a fantastic season.

A large part of Peterson’s success has been his consistency. He very rarely allows crooked numbers and has allowed more than two earned runs in just three of his 19 starts. The southpaw is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the year and now faces the Philadelphia Phillies for a second straight start.

The southpaw silenced the Phillies bats last week with just one run allowed on four hits in 7 2/3 innings, an encore is looming when these two teams meet up in Queens.

Peterson has allowed Over 2.5 earned runs in just two of his eight starts at Citi Field. One of those was his third start of the year back in June, and another came against the Braves in July. Since then, Peterson has allowed just three earned runs in 20 1/3 innings on home field.

Meanwhile, the Phillies have been struggling offensively, plating two runs or fewer in three of their last five games. Look for Peterson to hold off the Phillies bats yet again.

Phillies vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

David Peterson Under 2.5 earned runs

First five innings Under 4.5

Pete Alonso 2+ total bases

We witnessed this matchup just five days ago in Philadelphia, with Peterson and Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez pitching to a 2-1 final score. They’ve both been stellar over their past few outings and that should continue tonight.

Pete Alonso is batting .393 (11 for 28) with three home runs and a double during his current seven-game hitting streak. He’s 4-for-15 with a home run and a double against Sanchez in his career, so bank on the 'Polar Bear' to flex his muscles in this one.
