The red-hot Detroit Red Wings head to PNC Arena to face the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, and Carolina has big-time question marks in the crease.

Detroit has won three straight and six of its past seven without losing in regulation since the calendar flipped to January. The past two wins for the Red Wings have also been against a pair of Atlantic Division heavyweights in the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers.

Carolina stands as another tough opponent, but with goalie Pyotr Kochetkov out indefinitely with a concussion and Frederik Andersen (illness) on injured reserve, the Hurricanes are scrambling for saves. Veteran Antti Raanta has a confidence-shattering .869 save percentage, and rookie Yaniv Perets has only faced a single shot at the NHL level.

Even with the uncertainty in net, Carolina is a sizable home favorite in the NHL odds. Here are our free NHL picks for the Red Wings vs. Hurricanes showdown on Friday, January 19.

Red Wings vs Hurricanes predictions

Aside from close to league-worst goaltending at 5-on-5, it’s been business as usual for the Carolina Hurricanes to this point of the season. The Hurricanes pace the league in Corsi For percentage (59.5%) and rank third in expected goals percentage (55.7%) at 5-on-5. Carolina has also impressed on special teams with a fourth-ranked 27.2 power-play percentage and seventh-ranked 83.7 penalty-kill percentage.

Without question, the Hurricanes have been calmed by the third-worst team save percentage (.883). Of course, Carolina’s 24-14-5 record is nothing to shake a stick at, but even league-average goaltending would have them positioned much higher in the Eastern Conference standings.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a quick fix. Antti Raanta is fighting it, and Yaniv Perets is inexperienced. I’m just not convinced the Detroit Red Wings are the team capable of filling the net and capitalizing on Carolina’s netminder nightmare.

Detroit has the second-highest team shooting percentage (11.1%) despite generating the third-fewest expected goals per 60 (2.29) at 5-on-5. Additionally, the Wings are without veteran Patrick Kane, and his 2.87 points per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 pace the club.

I expect the Hurricanes to play ultra conservatively on Friday, which in turn will limit the high-end scoring chances for both teams. Additionally, with Detroit netminder Alex Lyon sporting a .923 SV% and a third-ranked 0.63 goals saved above average per 60 minutes, goals could be tough to come by for both teams.

Red Wings vs Hurricanes same-game parlay

PROLINE+

Under 6.5

Hurricanes moneyline

Along with the Under 6.5, I’m adding the Hurricanes moneyline to this same-game parlay. Carolina is 12-4-4 on home ice and has been sitting on a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings since Monday.

As discussed, Detroit has statistical correction ahead of its 5-on-5 shooting percentage, and the Wings are sporting an especially high 12.23% mark during their current 6-0-1 heater. Carolina suppresses opponent’s quality scoring opportunities and drives possession, so high-danger chances are going to be few and far between for Detroit.

I expect the ice to be tilted in Carolina’s favor all night, and the Hurricanes have a sizable advantage in my numbers. The Hurricanes check out second and third, respectively, in my offense and defense ratings, while the Red Wings rank 20th and 29th.

Red Wings vs Hurricanes moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Carolina is a huge home favorite across the industry, and there hasn’t been significant line movement. There could be buyback on the Red Wings leading into puck drop, but I’m not anticipating a major adjustment to these prices.

There is consensus chalk on the Under 6.5, and it is juiced to -120 at a number of shops. The -112 PROLINE+ odds stand out as one of the best prices available. Additionally, there hasn’t been notable line movement since opening, I’m not anticipating any major adjustments ahead of the game, either.
