The Ottawa Senators finish off a long nine-game road trip with a matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. With the World Junior Championships concluding over the weekend, the Senators will return to Ottawa later this week.
The Sens started the road trip with three straight wins to extend their streak to six, but have since lost four of their last five contests.
Ottawa has seen offensive production throughout the lineup and that includes veteran forward Claude Giroux.
Our top Senators vs. Red Wings predictions are expecting the forward to get a few pucks on net in the best NHL picks for Tuesday, January 7.
Senators vs Red Wings prediction
My Senators pick
Claude Giroux Over 1.5 shots on goal (-160 at Pinnacle)
My Senators analysis
Claude Giroux is in the midst of his third and final season of a three-year contract with his hometown Ottawa Senators. The veteran forward was brought in to help transition the team into contention and he’s put up decent numbers thus far.
Although Giroux isn’t shooting the puck as much as he once was, his shots on goal odds reflect that. While some players have their line set at 2.5 or even 3.5, Giroux just needs to get two shots on goal to hit his total tonight.
Giroux has scored one goal on seven shots over the last three games with multiple SOG in each contest. In fact, he’s had 2+ SOG in five of his last six games, including 3+ SOG in three of them.
On the season, Giroux has 2+ SOG in 26 of 38 games (68%) which is a tad above the 61.54% implied probability of these -160 odds. He’s also tended to shoot the puck a bit more on the road (42 SOG in 21 games) than at home (32 SOG in 17 games), and has already picked up two shots against the Detroit Red Wings this season.
Senators vs Red Wings odds analysis
The Ottawa Senators opened up as decent favorites against the Red Wings at around -130 but that line has steadily come down to just -112 as of the late morning. The Senators are without Linus Ullmark for the foreseeable future which could have an impact as bettors realize Ottawa will be starting either Anton Forsberg (.885 SV%, 3.04 GAA) or Leevi Merilainen (.884 SV%, 3.10 GAA) tonight in Detroit.
The total opened up at 6.5 but has been bet down to 5.5 with the Over slightly favored despite the goaltending issues in Ottawa. It’s a bit odd considering the fact that the Red Wings are also below the league average with an .897 SV% this season.
