After splitting the first two games of the series, the Los Angeles Dodgers (52-32) and San Francisco Giants (40-44) square up for a grudge match in Sunday’s series finale.
San Francisco took Game 1 in walk-off fashion and Los Angeles responded with a seven-run 12th inning in Game 2 to seal the victory.

My analysis
James Paxton gets the call for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. The 3.39 ERA for “Big Maple” looks pretty, but the foundation is unfirm — his 4.47 xERA, 4.79 FIP, and 5.17 xFIP all show signs of rot. The worry doesn’t stop there.
He’s striking out fewer batters than ever with a career-low 16.3% K% and his swinging strike % (8.6%) is a full four percentage points than it was just a year ago. To make matters worse, he’s issuing a ton of walks (12% BB%) which gives him the not-so-illustrious distinction of ranking in the 12th percentile in both K% and BB%.
It’s understandable that a 35-year-old is showing signs of decline. He’s pitching to contact and even that hasn’t gone well — Paxton ranks in the 33rd percentile in average exit velocity (89.5%) and the 38th percentile in hard-hit % (40.2%).
He’s been mighty fortunate that he hasn’t been battered around more so far this season and his rivals should be ready to dole out some punishment. The San Francisco Giants have hit lefties well all year and have continued to do so with strong numbers across the last 20 days, ranking eighth in wRC+ (122) and 10th in wOBA (.336) against southpaws.
Bob Melvin’s squad will utilize a bullpen game on Sunday… again. The Giants are simply running out of starting pitching options and used a bullpen game a day ago, surrendering 14 runs. This will be the fourth time in the last seven games they haven’t sent out a traditional starter.
It’s safe to say that the bullpen is taxed heading into Sunday after using seven relief arms a day ago. They’re not a particularly effective bullpen to begin with, ranking in the Bottom 10 in ERA (4.44) and WHIP (1.33) after Saturday’s meltdown.
I don’t love the pitching situation for either team and both lineups set up well on paper. With the wind blowing out to dead center at 10 to 14 mph throughout the game, I like this series to see its third straight Over.

Paxton has hardly been impressive with his 16th percentile chase % (24.5%) and 19th percentile whiff % (20.7%). The Giants are patient (10.7% BB% in the last 20 days) and avoid punchouts (19.2% K% in that time span).
One San Francisco bat set up for success on Sunday is Jorge Soler, who mashes lefties. The slugger has a .914 OPS against left-handed pitchers since 2022. He has a 115 wRC+ and a .327 wOBA against southpaws this season and has found a groove since moving into the leadoff spot.
