Lions 24, Roughriders 22: Veteran Paul McCallum made a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the game and Thomas DeMarco threw two touchdown passes 2:19 apart in the third quarter to lift visiting BC over struggling Saskatchewan.
DeMarco was 18-of-33 for 208 yards in his first career start in place of the injured Travis Lulay and completed scoring passes to slotbacks Nick Moore and Shawn Gore for the Lions (8-4), who climbed into a tie with the Roughriders for second place in the West Division. Defensive ends Jabar Westerman and Keron Williams each recovered a fumble by Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant, leading to 10 points for BC.
Durant found running back Chris Garrett for a 37-yard TD toss on the final play of the first half and connected with slotback Weston Dressler for an 8-yard score in the final minute of the contest, but the Roughriders (8-4) suffered their third straight loss as they were limited to fewer than 40 rushing yards without the injured Kory Sheets in the lineup. Durant completed 35-of-52 passes for 326 yards.
Buck Pierce - a veteran quarterback recently acquired by the Lions - replaced DeMarco for a few snaps in the second quarter, completing 2-of-3 passes for 16 yards. The break appeared to motivate DeMarco in the second half, as he connected with Moore for 43 yards and found Gore for 20 after Westerman’s fumble recovery.
Durant drove the Roughriders 79 yards in 59 seconds late in the fourth quarter, finding Dressler in the end zone with 38 seconds remaining. DeMarco completed a 16-yard toss to Gore and found slotback Courtney Taylor for 15 yards on third-and-10 to set up McCallum’s game-winning kick.
