Roughriders 32, Tiger-Cats 20: Backup quarterback Drew Willy completed 14-of-25 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his second career start as visiting Saskatchewan remained undefeated.
Willy connected with Geroy Simon, Chris Getzlaf and Weston Dressler for touchdowns in the second quarter. Kory Sheets became the first Roughriders running back to reach 100 rushing yards in each of the first five games of a season, finishing with 140 on 25 carries.
Henry Burris was 26-of-41 for 395 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats (1-4), who got off to a good start after losing 37-0 at Saskatchewan (5-0) last week. Lindsey Lamar recorded 115 total yards before leaving the game 3:56 into second quarter with an injury.
Willy, filling in for injured starter Darian Durant, helmed the Roughriders’ most productive quarter of the season and raised his career touchdown pass total to eight. Defensive tackle Tearrius George recorded three of his team’s seven sacks and forced one fumble as Saskatchewan held Hamilton to three points in the second half.
Lamar caught a 17-yard touchdown pass to stake Hamilton to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but received a helmet-to-helmet hit from Saskatchewan's Levi Steinhauer while returning a kickoff and did not return. Linebacker Brandon Isaac, playing in his first game for the Tiger-Cats after being signed earlier in the week, recorded two tackles and a sack before suffering a groin injury with 4:54 remaining in second quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Getzlaf caught an 18-yard touchdown pass on the play following Isaac’s injury. … Hamilton fell to 0-3 against West Division teams. … Saskatchewan is one win away from matching its 6-0 start to the 2008 season, which was the team’s best start since 1934.
