Roughriders 48, Blue Bombers 25: Darian Durant tossed a pair of touchdowns to both wide receiver Taj Smith and slotback Geroy Simon as host Saskatchewan used a strong second half to overcome Winnipeg.
Durant scrambled to avoid the Blue Bombers’ feared pass rush, completing 24-of-35 passes for 310 yards while only suffering one sack. Spencer Moore blocked a punt late in the contest while defensive backs Dwight Anderson and Terrell Maze reeled in interceptions for the Roughriders (8-1), who are enjoying their best record in franchise history after nine games.
Justin Goltz had Winnipeg (1-8) in the lead after a strong first half, but tossed two interceptions in the fourth quarter as the Blue Bombers dropped their seventh straight contest. Goltz also ran for two touchdowns while linebacker Henoc Muamba had an interception - the first Durant has thrown in 2013.
Saskatchewan outscored Winnipeg 34-7 in a dominant second-half display that began with a one-yard touchdown run by Kory Sheets on the first drive of the third quarter. The Blue Bombers failed to generate much offence beyond the long touchdown run by Goltz, who was sacked twice in the game by defensive end John Chick.
Winnipeg capitalized on Saskatchewan discipline issues late in the first half, scoring on a drive in which 34 of 45 yards came from Roughriders penalties. Durant responded by scoring in three plays on the following drive, which included a 36-yard toss to Smith and a 21-yard touchdown pass to Simon.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Simon’s second touchdown reception was his fifth of the contest, tying him with Terry Vaughn for second in CFL all-time catches with 1,006. Ben Cahoon holds the record at 1,017. ... Sheets, the league’s leading rusher, was limited to 29 yards on seven carries in the first half but finished with 91 and two touchdowns. … Saskatchewan defeated Winnipeg 52-0 at Mosaic Stadium on Labour Day weekend last year.
