Roughriders 39, Argonauts 28: Taj Smith caught touchdown passes of 61 and 70 yards while Kory Sheets ran for 178 yards and two scores as visiting Saskatchewan stayed perfect to start the season.
Darian Durant was 14-of-19 for 245 yards through just over three quarters of action while throwing three touchdown passes for the Roughriders (3-0), who held Toronto to just 76 rushing yards in another dominant display of run defence. Rob Bagg caught Durant’s 100th career touchdown toss in the first quarter.
Ricky Ray completed 26-of-36 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Andre Durie recorded 90 combined yards in the opening quarter, which he capped with a 10-yard touchdown reception that gave Toronto (1-2) a four-point lead.
Sheets finished a long drive with a two-yard scoring run and Smith beat Toronto defensive back Jamie Robinson down the right sideline for a 61-yard score for the Roughriders, who led by seven at halftime. Durant found Smith for another touchdown in the third quarter to extend Saskatchewan’s advantage, and Sheets put away the game with a 37-yard scoring run late in the fourth.
Durant left the game early in the fourth quarter after being sacked by Toronto defensive end Jonathan Williams. Drew Willy replaced Durant, completing his only passing attempt for nine yards. Toronto backup Zach Collaros replaced Ray late in the game, going 6-of-9 for 107 yards while rushing for 19 yards and a touchdown.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bagg, from nearby Kingston, Ont., caught his first touchdown pass since the 2010 season after missing 2011 and much of 2012 due to injury. … Argonauts WR Dontrelle Inman, who was a last-minute scratch in Week 2, battled injuries all game, catching five passes for 82 yards before leaving in the fourth quarter. … Saskatchewan SB Geroy Simon missed his third straight game and has yet to make his regular-season debut with the Roughriders. … Saskatchewan SBs Weston Dressler and Chris Getzlaf were held to four catches for 40 total yards combined.
