Alouettes 17, Roughriders 12: Rookie wide receiver Duron Carter caught six passes for 152 yards and one touchdown as host Montreal snapped a three-game losing skid in a defensive battle against Saskatchewan.
Quarterback Josh Neiswander completed 21-of-36 passes and kicker Sean Whyte made 3-of-4 field goals for the Alouettes (5-8), who moved within two points of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for second place in the East Division. Cornerback Geoff Tisdale, defensive back Jerald Brown and linebacker Chip Cox made interceptions, while defensive tackle Scott Paxson had two of the team’s four sacks.
Quarterback Darian Durant was 24-for-45 for 339 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for the Roughriders (8-5), who dropped their fourth straight game. Saskatchewan was limited to 15 rushing yards without league-leading running back Kory Sheets, who missed his second game with a knee injury.
Neiswander found Carter for a 45-yard touchdown toss late in the third quarter to give the Alouettes an 11-4 lead. Durant connected with slotback Weston Dressler for a 24-yard score to tie the contest 3:05 into the fourth quarter, but Whyte made a 40-yard field goal 3:13 later and added a 19-yard field goal with 2:28 remaining to seal the victory.
Montreal held a 4-3 lead at halftime. Saskatchewan had a chance to take an early lead on a 72-yard pass from Durant to slotback Chris Getzlaf, who was tackled at the Alouettes’ 3-yard line with 1:42 left in the first quarter, but the Roughriders were unable to convert on three rushing attempts and turned the ball over on downs.
