Roughriders 31, Tiger-Cats 10: Running back Anthony Allen recorded 158 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his CFL debut as host Saskatchewan demolished Hamilton in a rainy rematch of last season’s Grey Cup Final.
Darian Durant was 15-for-22 for 136 yards for the Roughriders, connecting with Allen and rookie Brett Swain for touchdowns. Ricky Foley recorded three sacks while John Chick and Derek Walker had two apiece as Saskatchewan got to new Tiger-Cats quarterback Zach Collaros 10 times.
Collaros finished 19-for-33 for 159 yards and a touchdown pass to Luke Tasker while also leading Hamilton with 18 rushing yards. The Tiger-Cats committed four fumbles, losing two of them.
Allen caught a 2-yard touchdown toss from Durant in the first quarter after a pair of solid rushing plays and added a 1-yard rushing touchdown on the second play of the second quarter. Hamilton conceded its second of two safeties 5:06 into the second quarter before scoring its only point of the first half on a 57-yard punt that went through the end zone for a single with 6:57 remaining.
Durant hit Swain for a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter after Levi Steinhauer recovered a fumble on the return of a missed Chris Milo field goal attempt. Collaros found Tasker for a 4-yard touchdown with 7:52 remaining in the fourth quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: A lost fumble in the first quarter was the only blemish on Allen’s debut. … Kick returner Brandon Banks might have been the best Hamilton player on the day, returning nine kicks for 148 yards, including a 45-yard return in the third quarter. … Tiger-Cats RB C.J. Gable appeared to suffer an injury in the first half and was largely ineffective (8 rushing yards on three carries) - a rough start to a season where he wants to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards.
