Stampeders 31, Roughriders 24: Drew Tate threw two touchdowns and rushed for a pair of scores as visiting Calgary held off Saskatchewan to become the first team to clinch a 2014 playoff berth.
Tate was 16-for-29 passing for 194 yards, connecting with Maurice Price and Anthony Parker for touchdowns for the Stampeders (12-2), who improved to 5-1 against West Division opponents. Jon Cornish rushed for 74 yards but stayed on the sideline for the second half due to a knee issue, while Jamar Wall, Keon Raymond and Fred Bennett caught interceptions.
Seth Doege got the start for the Roughriders (9-5) but was pulled after throwing as many interceptions as completions (three). Tino Sunseri completed 16-of-19 passes for 289 yards in replacement, finding Dan DePalma for a touchdown and rushing for another while Jerome Messam also scored a rushing touchdown.
Saskatchewan trailed by 24 points in the second half but tied the contest after Messam’s 1-yard touchdown rush 6:07 into the fourth quarter. Tate drove the Stampeders to the 1-yard line and a Roughriders penalty set up his second rushing touchdown of the contest to salvage the victory with 32 seconds remaining.
Wall’s interception ended Doege’s night 7:27 into the second quarter and Tate hit Price for an 11-yard touchdown two plays later. Tate threw a 7-yard touchdown toss to Parker with 7:44 remaining in the third quarter and added another score on a 14-yard rush 3:47 later, but Sunseri ended Saskatchewan’s scoring drought with 2:15 remaining on a 66-yard touchdown reception by DePalma and rushed for a touchdown on the final play of the quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Calgary WR Jeff Fuller returned to the lineup after missing six games with a shoulder injury but was hit hard on his first reception and left the contest. WR Simon Charbonneau-Campeau also left the game after a hard hit in the fourth quarter. … Calgary K Rene Paredes had a frustrating game, going 0-for-3 on field goal attempts. … Saskatchewan went more than six quarters without scoring after being shut out against Edmonton last week.
