Eskimos 18, Roughriders 10: Kendial Lawrence returned a punt for a touchdown and Hugh O’Neill was 3-for-5 on field goal attempts as host Edmonton hung on to defeat Saskatchewan.
John White had 134 rushing yards on 19 carries while Dexter McCoil, Aaron Grymes, Cauchy Muamba, Chris Rwabukamba and Ryan Hinds all made interceptions for the Eskimos (13-6), who advance to face Calgary in the West Division Final. Matt Nichols was 12-for-23 passing for 59 yards and one interception before being replaced by Mike Reilly, who was 6-for-8 for 53 yards.
Tino Sunseri completed 7-of-15 passes for 100 yards after taking over for Kerry Joseph, who threw all five interceptions but also connected with Korey Williams for the Roughriders’ only touchdown. Tyron Brackenridge, John Chick and Ricky Foley recorded sacks for Saskatchewan (10-9).
O’Neill kicked three field goals and a single to put Edmonton up by 10 points 6:57 into the second quarter. Lawrence scored on a 72-yard punt return with 6:30 remaining in the first half, only to be answered by Joseph’s 54-yard touchdown toss to Williams before halftime.
Joseph was pulled six minutes into the second half and Sunseri engineered a third-quarter drive that ended in a 30-yard field goal by Chris Milo to cut Saskatchewan’s deficit to eight points. The Roughriders were unable to get any closer after two drives were cut shot by sacks in the fourth quarter, while Reilly managed the clock on offence for Edmonton.
