Blue Bombers 45, Argonauts 21: Drew Willy threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns in his first start for host Winnipeg, which demolished Toronto to open the season.
Willy was 19-for-27 and connected with slotback Aaron Kelly five times for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Nic Grigsby recorded 122 rushing yards as the Blue Bombers’ new-look offence overwhelmed an inexperienced Argonauts defence.
Ricky Ray was solid under centre for Toronto, finishing 27-for-38 for 283 yards and two touchdowns, but the Argonauts could not break through until late in the first half after Winnipeg already had 24 points. Discipline was an issue all game for Toronto, which was flagged 22 times for 163 yards.
Willy found Kelly for a 27-yard touchdown on the opening drive and found Kelly again for a 9-yard score following a fumble recovery by linebacker Ejiro Kuale later in the first quarter. Willy tossed a 25-yard touchdown to slotback Cory Watson with 2:54 remaining in the first half and also found wide receiver Julian Feoli-Gudino for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Demond Washington returned a fumble by Argonauts running back Jeremiah Johnson 37 yards for a touchdown 1:25 after Ray found Johnson for a touchdown in the third quarter. Toronto slotback Chad Owens returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kelly, who is in his fourth CFL season, recorded 1,081 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior at Clemson University. … Argonauts DB Brandon Underwood caught an interception in his first career CFL start - the sole blemish on Willy’s stellar debut. … Watson left the contest with a lower-body injury after recording two catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
